Working in partnership with West Midlands Fire Service (WMFS) and the Chief Fire Officers Association (CFOA), the Chartered Institute of Housing CIH has produced a new practice brief focusing on fire safety in housing.
Each year there are over 50,000 fires in dwellings in theUK. Although fatalities are falling, the personal and business costs of fires in homes highlights the importance for all agencies involved in housing and communities to work together to ensure the safety of tenants and residents.
Fire Safety in Housing builds upon a series of regional seminars held by CIH, WMFS and CFOA which enabled fire and housing professionals to share approaches to practice for fire safety. The new practice brief is not technical guidance, but it illustrates how a range of different housing providers and the Fire and Rescue Services are working together and in partnership with tenants and residents to create safer communities. This new practice brief is also designed to compliment forthcoming Local Government Improvement and Development (LGID) guidance on fire safety in purpose built blocks of flats.

Tony Prosser, CFOA Housing Lead said: “Fire Safety in Housing explores fire safety issues for people living and working in social housing. It intends to raise the overall understanding of fire issues and how housing authorities enforce the provisions of the Housing Act 2004 supported by the Fire and Rescue Services. Safe homes make for safe tenants and safe fire fighters.”
