The Homes and Communities Agency’s Vulnerable and Older People Advisory Group, has delivered its first annual report.
The annual report from the Group, which advises and assists the HCA to deliver its ambitions to address the needs of vulnerable and older people through its policies and programmes, sets out a wide range of achievements, and key challenges and recommendations for the future.
Members of the Group provide expert advice on relevant issues including specialist housing development, best practice, planning and changing markets in housing for vulnerable and older people.
Key recommendations from the report include:
- The HCA should continue to prioritise innovation and investment in meeting the needs of vulnerable and older people and providing homes for some of the most disadvantaged people in our communities.
- The HCA should identify a senior champion for vulnerable and older people at Director level.
- The HCA should ensure that expertise and resources are in place across the agency to enable staff to carry out their responsibilities towards delivering the agency’s commitments and vision around vulnerable and older people. This should include a staff network, training courses, data and analysis on need and briefings on key local responsibilities, such as the Joint Strategic Needs Assessments.
- The HCA should consider how it may invest in existing housing stock for vulnerable and older people; for example, addressing the ageing sheltered housing stock.
- That the HCA should assess the financial impact of its investment in specialised housing and publish the results. The VOPAG identified the importance of measuring and demonstrating the impact of the HCA’s investment in supported housing and housing for older people.
