ERoSH members were a part of the 2,500 events that took place to celebrate the tenth anniversary of Silver Surfers’ Day.
To mark a decade of Silver Surfers Day, which encourages older people to get online and learn computer skills, a week-long ‘Spring Online’ campaign was run from May 15 to 20.
More than 70 sheltered housing schemes across England and Wales helped their residents get a taste of computers and the internet. These included ERoSH members ‘Johnnie’ Johnson Housing and Waltham Forest Housing Association which both held events.
Waltham Forest Housing Association had a special visit from the Rt. Hon. Iain Duncan Smith MP, Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, who visited Millennium House which hosted an event for 30 residents from across the Waltham Forest borough.
Iain Duncan Smith MP and Emma Solomon, chief executive officer of Digital Unite, joined sheltered housing residents to go online. Some residents took the opportunity to learn more about their hobbies and interests and others looked up how to start their own businesses.
In the north west ‘Johnnie’ Johnson Housing invited residents into its Manston Lodge scheme in Stockport where they learnt about email accounts and searching online for things such as shopping, family history, and hobbies and interests.
