Improving dignity and care

Age UK is appealing for people to email the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP to appeal for dignity and care for older people, following the damning findings made by the enquiry into Staffordshire Hospital.

On February 6, 2013 the Francis Inquiry into major failings at Mid Staffordshire NHS Foundation Trust published recommendations for sweeping reform following a catalogue of cases of neglect.

Age UK is now calling on people to email the Secretary of State for Health, Jeremy Hunt MP, today to ask him to make dignity and respect a reality for every older person who needs care.

In response to this and many other similar reports, Age UK has already acted by setting up the Dignity in Care Commission.

Now Age UK is calling for the Government to recognise that the system of hospital care for older people is fundamentally broken and show it’s up to the task of leading the process of root and branch reform.

Age UK claims that stronger regulation and accountability must be part of the solution but are by no means all of it. They say that this problem is so serious that it demands strong political and professional leadership and a comprehensive plan of action to transform culture and practice, as well as policy and systems.
