A new way of support planning

No one can accuse sheltered housing staff at RCT Homes of resting on their laurels.

After becoming the largest inWalesto achieve CHS accreditation and being nominated for two UK Housing Awards, the RCT Homes sheltered housing service is now overhauling the way it develops support plans for the residents of its 27 sheltered housing complexes.

A recommendation that came out of the accreditation process was for RCT Homes to make its support plans more person-centred.

A new form was designed that took into consideration potential changes to Supporting People funding and legislation.  The revised form and the recommendations were taken to a steering group of staff and tenants to seek their approval and views.  It was agreed that tenants on the group – along with a few others – would trial a support plan using the new form and feed their views back at the next meeting to ensure it was user-friendly and captured all the information required.

ERoSH’s director of policy and sheltered housing consultant Rebecca Mollart gave RCT  Homes’ staff training in interview skills using the new form as a guideline, ensuring that the questions asked were meaningful and led to the best outcome for tenants’ individual needs.

After a few further tweaks in response to feedback from scheme managers, RCT Homes expects the new process to be rolled out early in the year. Rena Karadogan, Sheltered Housing Manager, said: “We hope that this new approach will help us to continue tailoring our service to meet needs and expectations of our clients and create a home for life.”
